Last night we dined with some friends at Le Torri in Castiglione Falleto (one of the 11 villages that make up Barolo). As we ate our dinner enjoying some Cavalotto Langhe Nebbiolo we noticed that one of the brothers who make the wine, Alfio, was sitting at an adjacent table.

Unfortunately the terrace, which overlooks their vineyard had a booking of 20 so we were “relegated” to the courtyard with its view of the castle up the hill. The food as always was beautiful: Maltagliati (roughly cut pasta) with squid, scallops and tomatoes, skewered quail from the grill with a cereal/rice salad, grilled sardines, Tajarin (thin tagliatelle), ravioli al plin (small “pinched” eavioli), grilled veal fillet with oven roast vegetables, lamb cutlets with mountain potato chips, rabbit etc. At the end of the meal as we were enjoying our coffee and exquisite mini-meringues stuffed with cream, Alfio, who recognised us from a recent tasting, came over and offered us another glass or in this case a bottle of his 2001 Barolo Riserva Vignolo. A real treat from a charming young man. It served to underline our reasons for relocating here.
